Award-winning Pinoy teacher arriving to spread message of better education

Magsaysay awardee to speak before fellow Bosconians

A Filipino physics teacher who received the Ramon Magsaysay award last year for showing the way in innovative high school education is arriving in Cebu this weekend to spread his message of improving high school education.

Dr. Christopher Bernido will be speaking before fellow past pupils and alumni of Don Bosco schools during the alumni homecoming celebration at the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) in Punta Princesa on January 23, 2011. Bernido is an alumni of Don Bosco Technical College in Mandaluyong.

Bernido, along with his wife Maria Victoria, had turned a small high school in Jagna, Bohol, into a showcase for high school education especially in science and math in the country and abroad. Both received the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Awards, the Asian equivalent to the Nobel Awards, last year.

Aside from inviting Dr. Bernido as guest speaker, homecoming organizers are also launching the “Blessed Alberto Marville Award” to honor outstanding work and achievements of past pupils and alumni of the Don Bosco Technical High School (DBTHS), now known as Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC).

“Aside from our goal of improving secondary education, we want to inspire Bosconians who are now successful businessmen and professionals to help schools, churches, civic groups, and communities,” said Jonathan Vestil, chairman of the Don Bosco Cebu Alumni Inc. (DBCAI).

According to Vestil, the award is dedicated to Blessed Alberto Marville, a 28-year-old Bosconian who helped save people from being sent German concentration camps during World War 2 and became a leading civic leader in post-war Italy.

He was beatified on September 5, 2004 by Pope John Paul II.

“Marville’s life is an inspiration and worthy of emulation,” said Vestil who had been instrumental in the organization of this xyear’s homecoming.

During the homecoming, successful businesses owned and operated by Bosconians in Cebu will be displaying their products in an exhibit led by such establishments as Giardini del Sole, Southtrends, Bon Ace, and Lamesa ug Aparador.

Last year, Bosconians who are into business in Cebu had organized the Bosconian International Chamber of Commerce (BICC) which is part of an international network of past students of schools run by the Salesians of Don Bosco or SDB.

Formed by Saint John Bosco, the Salesians has since established schools in almost all countries in the world. The first Don Bosco school in Cebu was established during the 1950s at Punta Princesa, Cebu City.

It was last January 14, 2011 where SM Bowling Center in Cebu invited us to experience what SM Funky Bowling is like. It will be the very first Funky Bowling in SM City Cebu and we are humbly honored for having us during the SM Funky Bowling Launching in Cebu.




I actually thought it was easy, but I bet even professional bowlers will have a hard time getting a strike. It was one of the best experiences I would definitely bookmark and reminisce.

Specifically, this law requires establishments to set up lactation stations in the workplace and provide compensable time for breastfeeding and lactation periods.


Breastfeeding is nature’s way to nourish and protect young infants. The many benefits of exclusive breastfeeding to the child specifically in the first 6 months are irreplaceable. The positive effects for the working breastfeeding mother are equally rewarding.

Nokia recognizes real-life Santas

My friends and I will be leaving for Clark, Pampanga on February 11 until February 13, 2011. I can't wait to see all those hot air balloons flying. I'm also excited to see the rumored exhibitions of aircraft, sky diving and other exhibition that they say is super cool! I bet it is a must see!

What's Next For IMAX Theatre

Imax Theatre made a BIG BLAST before ending 2010 with Tron: Legacy. Tron: Legacy is on its last 2 weeks of showing (January 1 - 18). So for those who haven't watched the movie yet, or those who want to watch the movie again, you better set your schedules now. You won't regret it...it is one of the best movie ever, especially that it is enhanced by the extraordinary effects that Imax can project.

The Tron: Legacy Experience

The 3D experience of “TRON: Legacy” will bring viewers into the Grid, and along for the ride, more than any other film in cinematic history. Using the next generation of 3D technology developed after “Avatar,” “TRON: Legacy” will allow the audience to experience the digital grid and be part of the action in the highly stylized landscape.

Shooting in 3D achieves an immersive experience for the audience that mimics the immersive experience Sam has inside the computer; the audience does not simply witness Sam’s journey inside the Grid, they travel alongside him. The effect is enhanced by opening in 2D for the real-world scenes then switching to 3D when Sam enters the digital grid.

As Joseph Kosinski explains, “Ours is sort of a ‘Wizard of Oz’ approach. Ninety-eightpercent of the 3D is in the digital TRON grid. The 3D really starts once we get into the Grid.”

“TRON: Legacy” will also be presented in IMAX theaters, so the filmmakers are making preparations to enhance the audience’s enjoyment by providing a unique experience. Specifically, they are finishing several sections of the film in a tall format—not letterbox—and in an IMAX theater, that means black bars at the top and bottom of the frame will disappear and it will become a full-screen sequence.

Director Kosinski elaborates: “In IMAX theaters there are several sequences, amounting to about 43 minutes in the film, that will open up to an expanded aspect ratio. We’ll be switching from 2.35 to 1.78, which will provide more image at the top and bottom of the screen. This will create an even more immersive 3D experience.”
