HAVAIANAS PLAYBACK

Before tablets, computer games and smart phones, children played and amused themselves with sticks and stones craftily put together to have one rollicking good time outdoors. All one needed back then was the sun shining bright and high, and a group of friends willing to sweat. With all that fun, one did not even realize learning was already a part of it:

Piko, or hopscotch, taught early counting, balance and aiming for something using one’s hands, fingers and arms.

Bato lata is a game where players utilize an empty can confined inside a circle. To win, one has to knock the can out, and as much as possible knock it out of the circle from a designated distance using a flip flop. One is taken through the fundamentals of physics and trigonometry.

Chinese garter lets you defy gravity while rigorously testing ones muscle coordination and dexterity as two people hold both ends of a stretched garter horizontally while the others attempt to cross over it. The goal is to cross without tripping on the garter

And takyan, or the game of kick, is a test of balance as one uses force and momentum to keep the sipa airborne with kicks.

In 2008, Havaianas Philippines staged Playback at Bonifacio High Street and was a hit with families. Then in August 2010, it was a collegiate inter-organization invitational participated in by schools such as Ateneo De Manila University, U&AP, U.P. Diliman, and De La Salle University.

This February, with the help of the Cebu City Sports Commissioners, Havaianas Playback inspires nostalgia and school spirit at Siliman Univeristy in a one-day event, February 25, Saturday, at the West Quadrangle, Siliman University. Teams of eight comprised of different school organizations compete to win cash prizes from Havaianas.

Relive your childhood. Havaianas Philippines invites you to Havaianas Playback, a celebration of beloved childhood games on February 25, Saturday at the West Quadrangle, Siliman University, Dumaguete City.
