IBP holds 13th National Convention of Lawyers
The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) will hold its 13th National Convention of Lawyers on Aprl 7-9 at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center. This was announced by IBP Executive Vice President and President-elect Roan Libarios.The theme for this year’s event is “Living Up to the Standards of Integrity and Competence in the Legal Profession.” Some 4,000 lawyers from the IBP’s 85 chapters nationwide are expected to attend the biennial event.
Invited to keynote the convention is President Noynoy Aquino. Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona, meanwhile, is guest of honor in the National Bench and Bar Dialogue.
A major part of the convention proceedings are lectures on various current legal issues by a panel of experts. In line with the convention theme, the topics lined up include prosecution of human rights cases, law practice management and improving performance in the delivery of justice.
The lectures form part of the IBP’s Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) program and earns participants MCLE credits.
Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa has issued a circular that allows heads of government agencies, departments, bureaus and offices to authorize their lawyers to attend the convention on official time. A similar circular was issued by Supreme Court spokesperson and Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez in regard to judges, clerks of court and court lawyers.
The IBP is the official organization of all Philippine lawyers whose names appear in the Roll of Attorneys of the Supreme Court. It has about 50,000 members to date. Membership in the IBP is a requisite to practicing law in the Philippines.
The IBP is encouraging its members to book accommodations early in anticipation of high tourist traffic at Subic Bay Freeport during the summer season.
